    Interview Summary
    Hella Weiss (née Heilbronn), born on October 29, 1934, discusses her childhood in Lengerich, Germany; her memories of Kristallnacht; her trip to Holland with her sister and brother on a Kindertransport in March 1940; her time in a children's home; the family being reunited in Rotterdam and the family's deportation to Westerbork for four years; the underground activities of one of her brother's; the forced labor her sister and other brother performed; a dramatic incident in January 1944 when she had been placed on a transport to Auschwitz with her father and her mother pled with and convinced a Czech Nazi to spare her; being sheltered in the house of the Czech Nazi’s girlfriend for three months; being taken to Theresienstadt; remaining there with her mother until the camp's liberation by Russians in May 1945; the reunion of her family in Holland; and her family’s immigration to the United States.

    The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project conducted the interview with Hella Weiss on April 29, 1991. The interview was received by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives Branch in April 2007.
