    Interview Summary
    The interviews describe Mr. Balaban's childhood and young adulthood in Vienna, Austria; his memories of German Jewish refugees visiting his family after the ascent to power of the Nazi party in 1933; and of the Anschluss in March 1938. Mr. Balaban describes the enforcement of anti-Jewish laws, the loss of Jewish busineses; and witnessing persecutions and cruelties inflicted on Jewish citizens. He discusses his family's attempts to immigrate to the United States; his flight to Switzerland; and his experiences during the war years in refugees camps in Schaffhausen and Unteraergeri that were financed by the Swiss Jewish community and Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS.) Mr. Balaban describes his return to Vienna after the war; the damage and destruction he witnessed; and learning that his parents had been deported to Theresienstadt (Terezin) and Auschwitz and perished during the Holocaust. He describes his immigration to the United States and his work and family life after he arrived.

    The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project conducted the interview with Walter Balaban on August 8, 1994. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received the tapes of the interview from the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project in March 2001.
