    Transcript
    Nuremberg is left behind.
    Our good buses are southward bound and we are on the road
    again.
    These roads are not yet up to the mark
    of what the big automobile roads will
    be that are under construction, but sturdy enough,
    although a bit narrow when cyclists are around.
    Following the leading bus with the luggage trailing on behind,
    we have long ceased to worry about it.
    We sailed into Rothenburg ob der Tauber,
    one of the most beautiful old towns in the world.
    It stands today just as it did in the 14th and 15th century.
    Gable upon gable, shops and dwellings
    of artisans and craftsmen still today
    proclaiming the fundamental importance of handicraft
    as the basis of all economic life.
    We stopped at the [? Markus Storm ?]
    Inn and our official director unofficially confirms,
    Mr. Abernathy has it out with the birds.
    And after lunch, we complied with the clarion call
    of all aboard again.
    Augsburg and the Fuggerei, a forerunner
    of today's modern worker settlements
    founded by Jakob Fugger about 400 years ago.
    Age had its charms, thinks Mr. Schatz.
    And we parted from Augsburg steering still further
    South to launch back on the lake where Hitler was imprisoned
    in 1923 because of his political activities and principles
    and where he wrote his book My Struggle.
    A steep climb and we head for the lake country.
    The typical onion-shaped top of a church on the west side
    reminds us that we are in Bavaria.
    Our destination is the Ammersee, where
    we visit an educational institute and time is given us
    to swim and to rest.
    Tuned up for further adventures, we
    set our course for the mountains above the Bavaria.
    With our best well-trimmed, we rode along uphill
    and down the hill, just one large family,
    debating the import of this, that, and the other.
    And of course, between stops, asking questions.
    Are you all comfortable?
    You look at anyhow.
    Villages split by the houses adorned with flower boxes.
    It seems though as if the good weather is forsaking us
    and that Jupiter Pluvius or whoever is responsible for rain
    is about to happen in these.
    Clouds back up in front, and suddenly, we
    are in the midst of a downpour.
    But on rain follows sunshine.
    And with that, we sweep down into the Valley of Oberammergau
    and the Passion Play.

    Description
    REEL 4. The Schurz group travels by bus through rural landscape. In Rothenburg, they pass under stone archways and by Bavarian shops. Student with two birds. They go to Augsburg. A woman pumps water from a fountain. They drive through Landsberg, where Hitler was once imprisoned after the Beer Hall Putsch. The tour continues in the country. They take a break to swim and lay on the dock. More Bavarian landscape and villages. It rains, but the sunshine returns as they drive into the valley of Oberammergau.

    Carl Schurz was a German emigre who became active in American reform politics in the post-Civil War era, and was President Hayes’s Secretary of the Interior.
