Oral history interview with Eva Arond

Oral History

Eva Arond, born in June 1929 in Hamburg, Germany, discusses her father, who was a secretary in the Jewish Community Board, fought in German army in WWI, and worked for the Warburg Bank before 1933; her mother, who worked as a sales woman in her uncle’s clothing store; having a happy childhood; attending school; her older brother Alfred; living in an apartment next to a market; the events during Kristallnacht, including her father’s arrest and detainment in the labor camp in Oranienburg for six weeks; the destruction of her mother’s uncle’s store; the air raids in 1939 and hiding in a baker’s basement; receiving a visa from the US government and being sponsored by her mother’s brother; traveling in 1941 to Berlin and waiting for documents for several weeks; going to Lisbon, Portugal; crossing into Spain and seeing the destruction from the Spanish Civil War in Irún; traveling on a freighter ship named “Mouzinho” which departed on a Sunday evening and arrived in Staten Island, New York, on Saturday, June 21, 1941; a group of Jewish children (ages 4-10) who were also on the ship; turning 12 years old the week of their arrival; living in the Bronx with her family; knowing little English and starting the 3rd grade; meeting her husband when she was 18 years old; and visiting Germany six times after the war.
