    Interview Summary
    Sam Goldstein (né Salomon Goldstein), born January 15, 1920 in Obbach, Germany, discusses his father who fought for the German Army in World War I and died in 1923; his mother who held Polish citizenship which governed her existence in Germany; being the second youngest of nine children; his family’s decision in 1934 to send Sam to a Jewish youth camp in Munich to finish his studies and learn to be a shoemaker with the ultimate goal that he would immigrate to Palestine; learning in 1938 that Palestine did not need shoemakers and having to change his plans; being sponsored along with his younger brother by a wealthy Jewish-women to immigrate to the United States in 1938; working in the New York shoe business; getting married to Muriel, who was the daughter of his boss; being investigated as an “enemy alien” before being drafted in November 1942; going to basic training Fort Jackson, South Carolina; volunteering for overseas duty; being sent to North Africa for further training; being a member of the 36th Infantry Division in Italy; participating in the battle of Monte Cassino; receiving a concussion in battle and spending a few weeks in a hospital; returning to his unit; participating in the invasion of Southern France, along the Riviera; being awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his actions in securing the surrender of 59 German soldiers; participating in the Battle of the Bulge in the Alsace Lorraine area; serving as a German linguist in April 1945 and being transferred to Counter Intelligence in Offenbach, Germany; his work supporting the censorship of mail and phones; returning to his home town for three days, where he met some neighbors he had known in his childhood; the fate of his mother and his siblings; one of his brothers who fought in the Palestine Jewish Brigade; being discharged from the Army in November 1945; returning to the shoe business, working in Queens and in Manhattan; moving to Florida in 1982; retiring at the age of 97; his wife’s death in a car accident; being married for 65 years; and never returning to Germany after the war.
