    Interview Summary
    Mano Orel (né Emmanuel Ostrow), born April 24, 1925 in Athens, Greece, discusses his Ukrainian father, Aron Ostrow; his Turkish mother, Liza Machoro; his younger brother, Rudy (born Rafael); his father's successful, small factory that made men’s hats; his home life and living in a religiously mixed neighborhood; his family not being very religious, mostly attending synagogue only high holiday services; having a Bar Mitzvah; attending a German school for two years before transferring to a Jewish school to escape harassment; being aware of the political developments in Germany; his father's sudden death before the war started; his mother selling the factory before the Nazis invaded Greece; hiding with his mother and brother in the home of a non-Jewish family; obtaining false papers with the name Yanis Tranoris; joining the resistance in Thebes, Greece; his experiences with the black market, which led to closer interaction with Germans; becoming an interpreter for the German military police; using his access to food through the police to send provisions to his mother and brother in Athens; the deportation of his mother and brother to Auschwitz, where they were killed; joining the guerrillas in the nearby mountains; the Italian and German defectors who were among the guerrillas; the end of the war; returning to Athens; immigrating to Israel; becoming an Air Force radar technician; working for the Israeli government in New York City; getting married; becoming a US citizen; and the book he wrote about his wartime experiences.
