Oral History
Philip (Falk) Maisel, born on August 15, 1922 in Vilnius, Lithuanian, discusses his twin sister Bella Hirshorn and older brother Josef (both survived the Holocaust); the occupation of Vilnius by the Soviets and then the Germans; the persecution of Jews by Lithuanians and Germans; the massacre of Jews; the two ghettos in Vilnius; learning to be an automotive electrician; the liquidation of the ghetto in September 1943; being sent to extract shale oil (Ölschieferwerk Frommern) in Estonia work camps; being sent to several camps, including Dautmergen, Frommern, Schömberg, and Struthof; his jobs at the various camps; being sent on a death march; going to Ostrach, Germany, where they were liberated by French troops; going to Balingen near Frommern and working for the French Army and UNRRA; being a witness to a trial of the guards in Rastatt, Germany; his thoughts on Kapos; and his work at the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Melbourne, Australia.
