- Biography
- Slava Bornshtein (born Slava Bershatsky) is the daughter of Yeva (Chaya) Ziegelman and Moshe Bershatsky. Her grandparents Rachel Ziegelman (b. 1882, Vinnitsa) and Shmuel Ziegelman lived in Brailov in the Ukraine where Shmuel worked as a tailor. In addition to Yeva, they had four other children: Sonia (b. 1906), Liza, Peter (Petya, b. 1917) and Fira (Esther, b. 1919). Sonia was an engineer and married to Pinchas Khanuk. They had two children Bella (b. 1936) and Izya (b. 1938). Petya was a medical student and was married to Fania, a teacher. Fira was married to Misha and worked as a switchboard operator. Most of the family was killed during an Aktion in 1942. Yeva escaped with Slava hidden in a sack. They made their way to a ghetto in Zhmerinka and survived. Shmuel Ziegelman also survived as well as Liza Eisman who escaped to Uzbekistan with her baby daughter Raisa (b. 1941).
