- Summary
- Videotape testimony of John C., who enlisted in the National Guard after the invasion of Poland in September 1939. He recalls being called to active duty in January 1941; attending officer training school; assignment to a tank destroyer battalion; deployment in France in August 1944; crossing the Rhine; entering Ohrdruf in April 1945, having had no advance preparation; the pervasive stench, piles of corpses, and very few prisoners (walking skeletons); encounters with former prisoners including Leo L.; and taking photographs. Mr. C. notes not discussing this experience except with other members of his unit at their reunions, until a recent liberators conference in Washington. He shows his photographs of Ohrdruf.
