    Interview Summary
    Robert Sokal, born on January 13, 1926 in Vienna, Austria, discusses his father who had several paint stores; growing up in the middle class; being fairly assimilated; being an only child; attending a Catholic gymnasium, but experiencing discrimination and his mother placing him in the Chajes gymnasium, which was an Orthodox school; the Anschluss, at which time Jewish children could no longer attend a gymnasium; the detainment of his father in Dachau and Buchenwald; his father’s release in March 1939 once his wife obtained steamship passage from Trieste, Italy to Shanghai, China; his uncle who had left for Shanghai a month earlier; going to Shanghai with his family; being housed in Shanghai’s Embankment Building with expenses paid by the local Jewish community; the prominent Iraqi Jews in Shanghai; his mother hiding money which allowed them to secure a lease on a home; his aunt and uncle soon joining them; meeting his wife, who was a classmate in a college in Shanghai; immigrating to the United States and going to Chicago, IL; getting married when his wife arrived in Chicago; attending graduate school; and working at the University of Kansas for 18 years before moving to SUNY-Stonybrook.
