520    In September 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, the American film-maker Julien Bryan found himself the only neutral photographer to remain in Warsaw. Over a period of two weeks he shot several thousand feet of film, recording the devastation of the city and the anguish of its people. Early in 1940, his film Siege was released in theatres throughout the United States and in later years the material he brought back was used in many compilations, including Frank Capra's Why we fight series.
