Located on the grounds of the largest death camp constructed during the period, the Auschwitz Museum offered visitors the opportunity to understand the nature of the murders committed across Europe and the Soviet Union.Six decades later, the Auschwitz Museum now offers scholars a unique opportunity to reflect upon the historical development of the Holocaust museum, a key institution used in education across the world. Through its use of objects, historical documents, exhibitions and authentic locations, the Auschwitz Museum seeks to commemorate the Nazi genocides by using a diverse number of approaches to understanding the past. This work argues that the Auschwitz Museum is now a custodian of the past, an essential institution representing the Holocaust to a global public. Its position as a central image of the Holocaust allows the Auschwitz Museum to not only tell the stories of the past, but also to provide a base from which future generations may commemorate and draw lessons from the Holocaust. 530 Electronic version(s) |bavailable internally at USHMM. 533 Photocopy. |bAnn Arbor, Mich. : |cUMI Dissertation Services. |e22 cm. 590 Dissertations and Theses 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 610 20 Państwowe Muzeum Oświęcim-Brzezinka. 650 0 Holocaust memorials |zPoland |zOświęcim |xHistory. 856 41 |uhttp://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?did=1742044651&sid=37&Fmt=6&clientId=54617&RQT=309&VName=PQD |zElectronic version from ProQuest 956 41 |u http://dc.ushmm.org/library/bib209159/1463863.pdf |z Hosted by USHMM. 852 0 |bstacks |hD805.5.A96 |iA58 2009 852 |bwww 852 0 |bebook
