The Jewish Rescue Committee assumed that the Jews of America and Britain and the Zionists could influence others to provide funds for a rescue of the Hungarian Jews in Auschwitz. But as armies focused on fighting and the Zionists focused on a new Palestinian state, saving the Jews of Europe was not a priority. As the negotiations and ransom efforts stalled or were rebuffed, the fatal deportations began.
