This collection has never before been translated into English. Incisive and ironic, the writing evokes Roth's bitterness and despair at the coming annihilation of the free world while displaying his great nostalgia for the Hapsburg Empire into which he was born and his ingrained fear of nationalism in any form. Detailing the duplicities and criminalities of the Nazi regime, Roth denounced the terror sewn by Nazi storm troopers, the propaganda of Goebbels, the round ups, the assassinations, and the construction of concentration camps, alongside the seeming blindness of the rest of Europe, which appeared paralyzed in the face of Nazi expansion. Following the Anchluss in 1938, Roth, isolated in Paris, sunk into morbid alcoholism which lead to his death the following year. Within 12 months the Germans had overrun Paris. -- Provided by publisher. 505 0 Machine generated contents note: The Dream of a Carnival Night -- Exchange of Children -- The Death of German Literature -- The Third Reich -- Agency of Hell on Earth -- National Pyromania -- God in Germany -- In Lieu of an Article -- Pitiless Combat -- Europe Is Only Possible Without the Third Reich -- The Myth of the German Soul -- Requiem Mass -- Orator of Apocalypse -- Letter to a Governor -- The Vienna Prater -- The Inexpressible -- The Muzzling of German Writers -- Rest While Viewing the Demolition -- When Heroes Tremble -- In the Bistro after Midnight -- Proof of Ancestry in the Isolation Cell -- Exhibition -- A Truly Free City -- Our Homeland, our Epoch -- The Fall of Austria -- The Execution of Austria -- From the Black and Yellow Journal -- 12-13th March 1939. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 600 10 Roth, Joseph, |d1894-1939. 650 0 National socialism. 650 0 Nazis. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xCauses. 651 0 Germany |xHistory |y1933-1945. 651 0 Germany |xPolitics and government |y1933-1945. 700 1 Stone, William, |d1966- 830 0 On (London, England) 938 Baker and Taylor |bBTCP |nBK0013130702 938 Brodart |bBROD |n105215600 938 YBP Library Services |bYANK |n9370848 994 C0 |bLHM 852 0 |bstacks |hPT2635.O84 |iA2 2013
