These are the memories of a girl whose father was a Nazi. She tells us how she and her brother were in Nazi youth groups after which he joined the German Army and died in the war. She reconnects with a Jewish neighbor boy, Paul Kester, after learning his parents had been murdered in concentration camps. Excerpts from his own memoir appear throughout Vaupel's book. The mindset of those influenced by the Hitler's propaganda (including the author herself and her family) is questioned. The author gives a glimpse into the lives and attitudes of young Germans and their relatives in the years leading up to, during, and after World War II. She chronicles the story of her family as they move from Darmstadt to Wiesbaden to Łódź (Poland) and finally their time as refugees in Hohenstein-Ernstthal (Germany) before finally returning to Wiesbaden.
