Series 9 504 Includes bibliographical references and index. 520 "Pinchas Gutter, born to a Jewish family in Lodz, Poland, in 1932, feels World War II looming in the late 1930s. When Germany occupies Poland in September 1939, he and his family flee to Warsaw to try to escape the anti-Jewish laws and mounting persecution. But in October 1940, the Jews of Warsaw are incarcerated in the Warsaw ghetto. Pinchas and his family hide during roundups, but after the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in April 1943, they cannot escape the Nazis. They are taken to the Majdanek concentration camp, where Pinchas is separated from his family. Pinchas miraculously survives Majdanek and is then deported to a series of Nazi camps over the years--Skarzysko-Kamienna, Czestochowa (as part of the HASAG forced labour camps), Buchenwald, Colditz and, finally, after a death march, Theresienstadt, from where he is liberated in May 1945. An orphan after the war, thirteen-year-old Pinchas is taken to Britain with the help of Jewish relief organizations. In Britain, he begins to rebuild his life, but it is not until he ultimately immigrates to Toronto, Canada--after living in Paris, Israel and South Africa--that he finally feels free."-- |cProvided by publisher. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 600 10 Gutter, Pinchas, |d1932- 611 07 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958866 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |zPoland |vPersonal narratives. 650 0 Jewish children in the Holocaust |zPoland |vBiography. 650 0 Holocaust survivors |zCanada |vBiography. 650 7 Holocaust survivors. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958838 650 7 Jewish children in the Holocaust. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00982706 651 7 Canada. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204310 651 7 Poland. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01206891 648 7 1939-1945 |2fast 655 7 Autobiographies. |2lcgft 655 7 Autobiographies. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01919894 655 7 Biography. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423686 655 7 Personal narratives. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423843 655 7 Personal narratives. |2lcgft 710 2 Azrieli Foundation, |eissuing body. 830 0 Azrieli series of Holocaust survivor memoirs. |pSeries IX. 852 0 |bstacks |hDS134.66 |iG88 2017
