We saw the Germans, who had followed our footsteps in the snow. A group of four or five of them were moving three machine guns on skis along the road, continuously firing parallel to the horse stable and the roads. There was no way out.' Joseph Tomasov experiences loss even at a young age - being only three years old when his mother is placed in an institution and twelve when his father dies. At the age of nineteen, Joe is living in Czechoslovakia and working for a family as a tutor at the start of World War II. After being sent to a forced labour camp, Joe escapes and joins the Slovak resistance, fighting to free his country from the Nazi invaders. After the war's end, the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia complicates his plan to emigrate. Arrested and imprisoned for three years by the communist regime, Joe later returns to family life until confronted once again by another invasion, this time by the Soviets, and once again must choose freedom."-- |cProvided by publisher. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 600 10 Tomasov, Joseph, |d1920- 600 10 Tomasov, Joseph, |d1920- |xChildhood and youth. 611 27 Uprising (Slovakia : 1944) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01355244 611 27 World War (1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01180924 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |vPersonal narratives, Slovak. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xUnderground movements |zSlovakia. 651 0 Slovakia |xHistory |yUprising, 1944. 650 0 Holocaust survivors |zCanada |vBiography. 650 7 Holocaust survivors. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958838 650 7 Underground movements, War. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01355184 651 7 Canada. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204310 651 7 Slovakia. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01203007 648 7 1939-1945 |2fast 655 7 Biography. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423686 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Personal narratives |vSlovak. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01424167 655 7 Autobiographies. |2lcgft 655 7 Personal narratives. |2lcgft 710 2 Azrieli Foundation, |eissuing body. 830 0 Azrieli series of Holocaust survivor memoirs. |pSeries IX. 852 0 |bstacks |hD805.S56 |iT66 2017
