An admonition against the Jews (1546). 520 The place and significance of Martin Luther in the long history of Christian anti-Jewish polemic has been and continues to be a contested issue. It is true that Luther's anti-Jewish rhetoric intensified toward the end of his life, but reading Luther with a careful eye toward "the Jewish question," it becomes clear that Luther's theological presuppositions toward Judaism and the Jewish people are a central, core component of his thought throughout his career, not just at the end. It follows then that it is impossible to understand the heart and building blocks of Luther's theology without acknowledging the crucial role of "the Jews" in his fundamental thinking. Luther was constrained by ideas, images, and superstitions regarding the Jews and Judaism that he inherited from medieval Christian tradition. But the engine in the development of Luther's theological thought as it relates to the Jews is his biblical hermeneutics. Just as "the Jewish question" is a central, core component of his thought, so biblical interpretation (and especially Old Testament interpretation) is the primary arena in which fundamental claims about the Jews and Judaism are formulated and developed. -- Publisher information. 546 Text in English translated from German and Latin. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 630 00 Bible |vSermons. 650 0 Jews. 650 0 Christianity and antisemitism. 650 0 Antisemitism. 650 0 Christianity and other religions |xJudaism. 650 0 Judaism |xRelations |xChristianity. 630 07 Bible. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01356024 650 7 Antisemitism. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00810769 650 7 Christianity. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00859599 650 7 Christianity and antisemitism. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00859644 650 7 Interfaith relations. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01353343 650 7 Jews. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00983135 650 7 Judaism. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00984280 600 17 Luther, Martin |d1483-1546. |2gnd |0(DE-588)118575449 650 7 Juden. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4028808-0 650 7 Antisemitismus. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4002333-3 650 7 Antijudaismus. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4536893-4 655 7 Sermons. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423904 655 7 Quelle. |2gnd 655 7 Sermons. |2lcgft 700 1 Schramm, Brooks, |d1957- 700 1 Stjerna, Kirsi Irmeli, |d1963- 776 0 |tMartin Luther, the Bible, and the Jewish people |w(NL-LeOCL)356838854 856 42 |3Table of contents |uhttp://d-nb.info/104490688X/04 856 42 |3Author photo |uhttps://covers.openlibrary.org/a/olid/OL66601A-M.jpg 852 0 |bstacks |hBR333.5.J4 |iL8813 2012
