It focuses not simply on the ideas of leading politicians but analyses debates about Europe in "civil society" and the party-political sphere in Germany, asking if, and how, a "permissive consensus" was formed around the issue of integration. Taking Germany as its case study, the book offers context to the post-war debates, analysing the continuities that existed between interwar and post-war plans for European integration. It draws attention to the abiding scepticism of democracy displayed by many advocates of integration, indeed suggesting that groups across the ideological spectrum converged around support for European integration as a way of constraining the practice of democracy within nation-states. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 651 0 Europe |xPolitics and government |y1918-1945. 650 0 European federation |xHistory |y20th century. 651 0 Germany |xPolitics and government |y1918-1933. 651 0 Germany (West) |xPolitics and government. 650 0 Civil society |zGermany |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Civil society |zEurope |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Socialism |zEurope |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Democracy |zEurope |xHistory |y20th century. 650 7 Civil society. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00862876 650 7 Democracy. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00890077 650 7 European federation. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00916717 650 7 Politics and government. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01919741 650 7 Socialism. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01123637 651 7 Europe. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01245064 651 7 Germany. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01210272 651 7 Germany (West) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01210273 650 7 Europabild. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4015704-0 650 7 Europäische Integration. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4071013-0 651 7 Deutschland. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4011882-4 648 7 1900-1999 |2fast 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 852 0 |bstacks |hD1060 |i.B237 2013
