In 'Memory Passages', Natasha Goldman analyzes both previously-overlooked and internationally-recognized Holocaust memorials in the United States and Germany from the postwar period to the present, drawing on many historical documents for the first time. From the perspectives of visual culture and art history, the book examines changing attitudes toward the Holocaust and the artistic choices that respond to it.The book introduces lesser-known sculptures, such as Nathan Rapoport's 'Monument to the Six Million Jewish Martyrs' in Philadelphia, as well as internationally-acclaimed works, such as Peter Eisenman's 'Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe' in Berlin. Other artists examined include Will Lammert, Richard Serra, Joel Shapiro, Gerson Fehrenbach, Margit Kahl, and Andy Goldsworthy. Archival documents and interviews with commissioners, survivors, and artists reveal the conversations and decisions that have shaped Holocaust memorials. 'Memory Passages' suggests that memorial designers challenge visitors to navigate and activate spaces to engage with history and memory by virtue of walking or meandering. This book will be valuable for anyone teaching-or seeking to better understand-the Holocaust. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 Holocaust memorials |zUnited States. 650 0 Holocaust memorials |zGermany. 650 0 Memorialization |zUnited States. 650 0 Memorialization |zGermany. 650 0 Art and history |zUnited States. 650 0 Art and history |zGermany. 650 7 Art and history. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00815396 650 7 Holocaust memorials. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958834 650 7 Memorialization. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01200580 651 7 Germany. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01210272 651 7 United States. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204155 650 7 Holocaust memorials |zUnited States. |2nli 650 7 Holocaust memorials |zGermany. |2nli 650 7 Memorialization |zUnited States. |2nli 650 7 Memorialization |zGermany. |2nli 650 7 Art and history |zUnited States. |2nli 650 7 Art and history |zGermany. |2nli 650 7 Monuments commémoratifs de la Shoah |zAllemagne. |2ram |0(FrPBN)12121383 |0(FrPBN)11930867 650 7 Monuments commémoratifs de la Shoah |zÉtats-Unis. |2ram |0(FrPBN)12121383 |0(FrPBN)11931371 650 7 Art et histoire |zAllemagne. |2ram |0(FrPBN)11951670 |0(FrPBN)11930867 650 7 Art et histoire |zÉtats-Unis. |2ram |0(FrPBN)11951670 |0(FrPBN)11931371 776 08 |iOnline version:Goldman, Natasha, 1970- author. |tMemory passages |dPhiladelphia : Temple University Press, 2020 |z9781439914250 |w(DLC) 2019011036 856 41 |uhttps://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/ushmm/detail.action?docID=6027286 |zHosted by ProQuest |3Electronic version(s) available. 852 0 |bstacks |hD804.17 |i.G649 2020 852 |bebook
