An unlikely band of librarians, scholars, soldiers, and spies went to Europe to collect books and documents to aid the Allies' cause. They travelled to neutral cities to find enemy publications for intelligence analysis and followed advancing armies to capture records in a massive program of confiscation. After the war, they seized Nazi works from bookstores and schools and gathered together countless looted Jewish books. Improvising library techniques in wartime conditions, they contributed to Allied intelligence, preserved endangered books, engaged in restitution, and participated in the denazification of book collections. Information Hunters explores what collecting meant to the men and women who embarked on these missions, and how the challenges of a total war led to an intense focus on books and documents. It uncovers the worlds of collecting, in spy-ridden Stockholm and Lisbon, in liberated Paris and devastated Berlin, and in German caves and mineshafts. The wartime collecting missions had lasting effects. They intensified the relationship between libraries and academic institutions, on the one hand, and the government and military, on the other. Book and document acquisition became part of the apparatus of national security, military planning, and postwar reconstruction. These efforts also spurred the development of information science and boosted research libraries' ambitions to be great national repositories for research and the dissemination of knowledge that would support American global leadership, politically and intellectually."-- |cProvided by publisher. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xConfiscations and contributions |zEurope. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xMilitary intelligence |zUnited States. 650 0 Books |zEurope |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Intelligence service |zUnited States |xInformation services. 650 0 Acquisitions (Libraries) |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Cultural property |xProtection |zEurope |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Librarians |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xDestruction and pillage |zEurope. 610 10 United States. |bOffice of Strategic Services. 610 20 Library of Congress Mission to Germany. 650 7 HISTORY / Military / World War II. |2bisacsh 650 7 RELIGION / Judaism / History. |2bisacsh 610 27 Library of Congress Mission to Germany. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01600056 610 17 United States. |bOffice of Strategic Services. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00542242 650 7 Acquisitions (Libraries) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00796015 650 7 Books. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00836401 650 7 Confiscations. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00874759 650 7 Cultural property |xProtection. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00885019 650 7 Destruction and pillage. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01906941 650 7 Librarians. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00997301 650 7 Military intelligence. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01021270 651 7 Europe. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01245064 651 7 United States. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204155 650 7 Archivar. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4002865-3 650 7 Aufklärung |gMilitär. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4143395-6 650 7 Beschlagnahme. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4144867-4 650 7 Bibliothekarin. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4145264-1 650 7 Druckwerk. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4013134-8 650 7 Geheimdienst. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4019737-2 650 7 Informationseinrichtung. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4161667-4 650 7 Weltkrieg |g1939-1945. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4079167-1 651 7 Europa. |2gnd 651 7 USA. |2gnd 610 17 USA |bOffice of Strategic Services. |2gnd |0(DE-588)2083772-0 650 7 World War, 1939-1945 |xConfiscations and contributions |zEurope. |2nli 650 7 World War, 1939-1945 |xMilitary intelligence |zUnited States. |2nli 650 7 Books |zEurope |xHistory |y20th century. |2nli 650 7 Intelligence service |zUnited States |xInformation services. |2nli 650 7 Acquisitions (Libraries) |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. |2nli 650 7 Cultural property |xProtection |zEurope |xHistory |y20th century. |2nli 650 7 Librarians |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. |2nli 650 7 World War, 1939-1945 |xDestruction and pillage |zEurope. |2nli 610 17 United States. |bOffice of Strategic Services. |2nli 610 27 Library of Congress Mission to Germany. |2nli 647 7 World War |d(1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01180924 648 7 1900-1999 |2fast 655 7 Creative nonfiction. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01919909 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Creative nonfiction. |2lcgft 852 0 |bscstacks |hD810.C8 |iP45 2020
