The recent spotlight on central bank independence is reminiscent of the fiery debates amongst Germany's political elites in 1949 on the same issue; debates that were sparked by the establishment of West Germany in that year. Simon Mee shows how, with the establishment of West Germany's central bank - today's Deutsche Bundesbank - the country's monetary history became a political football, as central bankers, politicians, industrialists and trade unionists all vied for influence over the legal provisions that set out the remit of the future monetary authority. The author reveals how a specific version of inter-war history, one that stresses the lessons learned from Germany's periods of inflation, was weaponised and attached to a political, contemporary argument for an independent central bank. The book challenges assumptions around the evolution of central bank independence with continued relevance today. 504 Includes bibliographical references and index. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 Banks and banking, Central |zGermany |xHistory. 650 0 Monetary policy |zGermany |xHistory. 651 0 Germany |xEconomic policy. 651 0 Germany |xEconomic conditions. 650 7 Banks and banking, Central. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00827036 650 7 Economic history. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00901974 650 7 Economic policy. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00902025 650 7 Monetary policy. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01025230 651 7 Germany. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01210272 650 7 Geld. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4019889-3 650 7 Geldpolitik. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4019902-2 650 7 Wirtschaftspolitik. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4066493-4 651 7 Deutschland. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4011882-4 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 852 0 |bscstacks |hHG3054 |i.M44 2019
