The Holocaust put the ideological convictions of Kornel Filipowicz, Józef Mackiewicz, Tadeusz Borowski, Zofia Kossak, Leopold Buczkowski, Jerzy Andrzejewski, and Stefan Otwinowski to the ultimate test. Tragically, witnessing the horror of the Holocaust implied complicity with the perpetrator and produced an existential crisis that these writers, who were all exempted from the genocide thanks to their non-Jewish identities, struggled to resolve in literary form. Polish Literature and the Holocaust: Eyewitness Testimonies,1942-1947 is a particularly timely book in view of the continuing debates about the attitudes of Poles toward the Jews during the war. The literary voices from the past that Brenner examines posit questions that are as pertinent now as they were then. And so, while this book speaks to readers who are interested in literary responses to the Holocaust, it also illuminates the universal issue of the responsibility of witnesses toward the victims of any atrocity--Provided by publisher. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 Polish literature |y20th century |xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |zPoland |xInfluence. 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |zPoland |vPersonal narratives. 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945), in literature. 650 7 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) in literature. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958923 650 7 Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00972484 650 7 Polish literature. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01069089 651 7 Poland. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01206891 650 7 Augenzeugenbericht. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4296633-4 650 7 Judenvernichtung. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4073091-8 650 7 Literatur. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4035964-5 650 7 Polnisch. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4120314-8 651 7 Polen. |2gnd |0(DE-588)4046496-9 650 7 Polish literature |y20th century |xHistory and criticism. |2nli 650 7 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |zPoland |xInfluence. |2nli 650 7 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |zPoland |vPersonal narratives. |2nli 650 7 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945), in literature. |2nli 647 7 Jewish Holocaust |d(1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958866 648 7 1900-1999 |2fast 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 Personal narratives. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423843 655 7 Personal narratives. |2lcgft 852 0 |bscstacks |hPG7053.H63 |iB73 2019
