As a result of this proximity, Mennonites were neighbours to and witnessed the destruction of European Jews. In some cases they were beneficiaries or even enablers of the Holocaust. Much of this history was forgotten after the war, as Mennonites sought to rebuild or find new homes as refugees. The result was a myth of Mennonite innocence and ignorance that connected their own suffering during the 1930s and 1940s with earlier centuries of persecution and marginalization. European Mennonites and the Holocaust identifies a significant number of Mennonite perpetrators, along with a smaller number of Mennonites who helped Jews survive, examining the context in which they acted. In some cases, theology led them to accept or reject Nazi ideals. In others, Mennonites chose a closer embrace of German identity as a strategy to improve their standing with Germans or for material benefit." -- |cProvided by publisher. 530 Issued also in electronic formats. 650 0 Mennonites |zEurope |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Mennonites |zEurope |xSocial conditions |y20th century. 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xCollaborationists |zEurope. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xUnderground movements |zEurope. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945. 650 7 Collaborationists. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00867081 650 7 Mennonites. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01016181 650 7 Mennonites |xSocial conditions. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01016223 650 7 Underground movements, War. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01355184 651 7 Europe. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01245064 647 7 Jewish Holocaust |d(1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958866 647 7 World War |d(1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01180924 648 7 1900-1999 |2fast 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 Jantzen, Mark, |d1963- |eeditor. 700 1 Thiesen, John D., |eeditor. 776 08 |iOnline version: |tEuropean Mennonites and the Holocaust. |dToronto ; Buffalo ; London : University of Toronto Press : published in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2020 |z1487537255 |z9781487537258 |w(OCoLC)1182930093 852 0 |bscstacks |hD810.C665 |iE97 2020
