In the nineteenth-century it was a free-floating concept which travelled to Eastern Europe and the United States. Eastern European "ghettos", which enabled genocide, were crudely rehabilitated by the Nazis during World War Two as if they were part of a benign medieval tradition. In the United States, the word ghetto was routinely applied to endemic black ghettoization which has lasted from 1920 until the present. Outside of America "the ghetto" has been universalized as the incarnation of class difference, or colonialism, or apartheid, and has been applied to segregated cities and countries throughout the world. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 Ethnic neighborhoods |xHistory. 650 0 Inner cities |xHistory. 650 0 Jewish ghettos |xHistory. 650 0 Segregation |xHistory. 650 0 Ghetto (The English word) 650 7 Ethnic neighborhoods. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00915999 650 7 Ghetto (The English word) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst02009246 650 7 Inner cities. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00973711 650 7 Jewish ghettos. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00982786 650 7 Segregation. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01111205 650 7 Ethnic neighborhoods |xHistory. |2nli 650 7 Inner cities |xHistory. |2nli 650 7 Jewish ghettos |xHistory. |2nli 650 7 Segregation |xHistory. |2nli 650 7 Ghetto (The English word) |2nli 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iebook version : |z9780191847202 830 0 Very short introductions ; |v648. 852 0 |bscstacks |hHT221 |i.C44 2020
