The majority of these women died, unable to survive the ordeal. Those survivors who came back home kept silent about their brutal experiences for about fifty years. In the late 1980s, the women's movement in South Korea helped start the redress movement for the victims, encouraging many survivors to come forward to tell what happened to them. With these testimonies, the redress movement gained strong support from the UN, the United States, and other Western countries. Korean "Comfort Women" synthesizes the previous major findings about Japanese military sexual slavery and legal recommendations, and provides new findings about the issues "comfort women" faced for an English-language audience. It also examines the transnational redress movement, revealing that the Japanese government has tried to conceal the crime of sexual slavery and to resolve the women's human rights issue with diplomacy and economic power."-- |cProvided by publisher. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 Comfort women |zKorea |xHistory. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xWomen |zKorea. 650 0 Service, Compulsory non-military |zJapan. 650 0 Reparations for historical injustices. 650 0 Women |xCrimes against |zKorea. 650 0 Sexual abuse victims |zKorea. 650 0 Women and war |zKorea |y20th century. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xAtrocities |zKorea. 650 7 Atrocities. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00820727 650 7 Comfort women. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00869131 650 7 Reparations for historical injustices. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01732564 650 7 Service, Compulsory non-military. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01113525 650 7 Sexual abuse victims. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01114783 650 7 Women. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01176568 650 7 Women and war. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01177123 650 7 Women |xCrimes against. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01176618 651 7 Japan. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204082 651 7 Korea. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01206434 650 7 HISTORY / World. |2bisacsh 647 7 World War |d(1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01180924 648 7 1900-1999 |2fast 655 7 Biographies. |2lcgft 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Informational works. |2lcgft 650 7 Women. |2homoit 650 7 Womyn. |2homoit 830 0 Genocide, political violence, human rights series. 852 0 |bscstacks |hD810.C698 |iM56 2021 |tc. 2 852 0 |bscstacks |hD810.C698 |iM56 2021
