Scanlan examines the Suite Française and other works that address the rise of fascism and anti-Semitism. Viewing Némirovsky as a major talent with a distinctive style and voice, Scanlan argues for Némirovsky's keen awareness of the unsettled times in which she lived and examines the ways in which even her novels of manners analyze larger social issues. Scanlan shows how Némirovsky identified with France as the center of culture and Enlightenment values, a nation where a thoughtful artist could choose her own identity. The Russian Revolution had convinced Némirovsky that violent liberations led to further violence and repression, that interior freedom required political stability. In 1940, when French democracy had collapsed and many seemed reconciled to the Vichy state, Némirovsky's idea of private freedom faltered--a recognition that her last work, Suite Française, for all its seeming reticence, makes poignantly clear."--Provided by publisher. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 Jews |zFrance. 650 0 Jewish authors |zFrance |y20th century. 600 10 Némirovsky, Irène, |d1903-1942 |xCriticism and interpretation. 650 6 Juifs |zFrance. |0(CaQQLa)201-0219742 650 6 Écrivains juifs |0(CaQQLa)201-0059597 |zFrance |0(CaQQLa)201-0452039 |y20e siècle. |0(CaQQLa)201-0373677 600 17 Némirovsky, Irène, |d1903-1942. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00225387 650 7 Jews. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00983135 650 7 Jewish authors. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00982665 651 7 France. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204289 600 17 Némirovsky, Irène, |d1903-1942 |xCriticism and interpretation. |2nli 650 7 Jewish women authors |zFrance |vBiography. |2nli 650 7 Jews |zFrance |vBiography. |2nli 650 7 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |zFrance. |2nli 650 7 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945), in literature. |2nli 650 7 Antisemitism in literature. |2nli 600 17 Némirovsky, Irène |d(1903-1942) |xCritique et interprétation. |2ram 648 7 1900-1999 |2fast 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 Biographies. |2lcgft 776 08 |iOnline version:Scanlan, Margaret, 1944- |tUnderstanding Irène Némirovsky. |dColumbia : The University of South Carolina Press, [2018] |z9781611178692 |w(DLC) 2017043136 830 0 Understanding modern European and Latin American literature. 852 0 |bscstacks |hPQ2627.E4 |iZ88 2018
