Filled with a sense of adventure and national pride, they left their parents' homes wearing their best clothes and confidently waving good-bye. Believing they were going to work in a factory for a few months, they were eager to report for government service. Instead, the young women--many of them teenagers--were sent to Auschwitz. Their government paid 500 Reich Marks (about $200) apiece for the Nazis to take them as slave labor. Of those 999 innocent deportees, only a few would survive. The facts of the first official Jewish transport to Auschwitz are little known, yet profoundly relevant today. These were not resistance fighters or prisoners of war. There were no men among them. Sent to almost certain death, the young women were powerless and insignificant not only because they were Jewish--but also because they were female. Now acclaimed author Heather Dune Macadam reveals their poignant stories, drawing on extensive interviews with survivors, and consulting with historians, witnesses, and relatives of those first deportees to create an important addition to Holocaust literature and women's history. 530 Electronic version(s) available online. 505 0 Foreword / by Caroline Moorehead -- Author's note -- Principal characters on first transport -- Part one -- Part two -- Part three -- Homecomings -- Afterwards -- One final world. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 Jewish women in the Holocaust. 610 20 Auschwitz (Concentration camp) 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |zPoland. 655 0 History. 650 7 HISTORY / Holocaust. |2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY / Jewish. |2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY / Military / World War II. |2bisacsh 610 27 Auschwitz (Concentration camp) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00723014 650 7 Jewish women in the Holocaust. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00983091 651 7 Poland. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01206891 647 7 Jewish Holocaust |d(1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958866 648 7 1939-1945 |2fast 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Personal narratives. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423843 655 7 Personal narratives. |2lcgft 650 7 Jewish women in the Holocaust. |2nli 610 27 Auschwitz (Concentration camp) |2nli 650 7 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |zPoland. |2nli 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) 700 1 Moorehead, Caroline, |ewriter of foreword. 856 41 |3Electronic version(s) available. |zHosted by ProQuest |uhttps://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/ushmm/detail.action?docID=5817180 852 0 |bscstacks |hD804.47 |i.M33 2020 852 |bebook
