In the Banat district of the province of Vojvodina, the multiplicity of languages and religions and changes of place-names was a matter of course. What is practically unprecedented, all files, folders and documents of the law office have survived. They concern marriages, divorces, births and testaments, as well as expulsions, emigrations, incarcerations and releases of these largely rural and small-town dwellers. Mundane cases reflect times through war, peace, revolution and counter-revolution, through serfdom and freedom, through comfort and poverty. The files also show everyday lives shaped in spite of history. Tibor Várady transforms them into affecting and vivid vignettes, selecting and commenting without sentimentality but with empathy. The law office of the three generations of the Várady family demonstrates that the legal profession permits and in difficult times even requires its members to defend the ordinary men and women against the powers of state and society"-- |cProvided by publisher. 650 0 Practice of law |zSerbia |zZrenjanin |xHistory. 650 0 Lawyers |zSerbia |zZrenjanin |xHistory. 650 0 Law offices |zSerbia |zZrenjanin |xHistory. 650 7 Law offices. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00994060 650 7 Lawyers. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00994346 650 7 Practice of law. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01074534 651 7 Serbia |zZrenjanin. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01695941 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 Boris, János, |etranslator. 700 1 Good, Owen, |etranslator. 700 1 Lengyel Balikó, Péter, |etranslator. 776 08 |iOnline version:Várady, Tibor, 1939- |tPeople in spite of history |dBudapest, Hungary ; New York : Central European University Press, 2021 |z9789633864081 |w(DLC) 2020048006 852 0 |bscstacks |hKKS1162.9 |i.V37 2021
