- Summary
- Today is the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, the largest military uprising in German-occupied Europe. An event that is considered one of the most important in the recent history of Poland. In his book, writer Radosław Wiśniewski decided to recreate the events that took place on the same day and month, but in 1944. On the anniversary of the "W" Hour, it was published for the first time in the Wolne Lektury library, and its content is supplemented by illustrations by Tomasz Bohajedyn. The patronage of the publication is provided by the Historykon portal. Artur Wodzyński, the book's historical editor, wrote in the introduction that "the very first pages of the Uprising palimpsest force us to reflect that it escapes simple categorization. The author who, by weaving his own experiences into the narrative, took care to give it a personal, unique character. He did not take shortcuts along the paths blazed by authors of popular publications. Instead, he took the trouble to learn and put down real human stories. Stories that are often hidden behind the dry words of scientific studies analyzing combat operations in Warsaw, in which at the end of the description of the clash the fallen and wounded are briefly listed, sometimes adding the adjective "fierce", "heroic". "In his book, the author skillfully moves from the broad perspective of a dying city to individual, usually tragic fates. He especially cares about introducing the reader to his characters, even those about whom little is known, and tries to reconstruct their characters from the available scraps of information. Memory remains alive as long as it can be referred to in an unofficial way. And this is the origin of the Palimpsest The Rise of Radosław Wiśniewski. The notes that later became part of it were first published on Facebook. What is even more impressive is the fact that this material was collected into a unified whole.
