Jesuit Kaddish is a long overdue study that looks at Jesuit hostility toward Judaism before the Shoah, and then examines the development of a new understanding of the Catholic Church's relation to Judaism that culminated with Vatican II's landmark decree Nostra aetate. James Bernauer's study is historically accurate and spiritually ambitious in its desire to have this story of the Jesuits' relation to Jews and Judaism contribute to interreligious reconciliation. At the end of the twentieth century, Pope John Paul II called the Catholic Church to examine its responsibility for anti-Semitism that led to the Shoah. In this study, Bernauer undertakes such a self-examination as a member of the Jesuit order. This new book demonstrates the way in which Jesuit hostility operated, examining Jesuit moral theology's dualistic approach to sexuality and, in the case of Nazi Germany, the articulation of an unholy alliance between a sexualizing and a Judaizing of German culture. Bernauer then identifies an influential group of Jesuits whose thought and action contributed to the developments in Catholic teaching about Judaism that eventually led to the watershed moment of Nostra aetate. At the heart of this transformation after World War II was the Jesuit Cardinal Augustin Bea. But leading to this change of view were earlier Jesuit spiritual insurrections against Nazism. This book concludes with a proposed statement of repentance from the Jesuits and an appendix presenting the fifteen Jesuits who have been honored as "Righteous Among the Nations" by Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust Center. Jesuit Kaddish offers a crucial contribution to the fields of Catholicism and Nazism, Catholic-Jewish relations, Jesuit history, and the history of anti-Semitism in Europe"-- |cProvided by publisher. 610 20 Jesuits |xHistory |y20th century. 610 20 Jesuits |xHistory |y21st century. 650 0 Holocaust (Christian theology) 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) 610 20 Catholic Church |xRelations |xJudaism. 650 0 Judaism |xRelations |xCatholic Church. 611 20 Vatican Council |n(2nd : |d1962-1965 : |cBasilica di San Pietro in Vaticano). |tDeclaratio de ecclesiae habitudine ad religiones non-Christianas. 650 0 Righteous Gentiles in the Holocaust. 610 27 Catholic Church. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00531720 610 27 Jesuits. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00532143 630 07 Declaratio de ecclesiae habitudine ad religiones non-Christianas (Vatican Council) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01356776 650 7 Holocaust (Christian theology) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958821 650 7 Interfaith relations. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01353343 650 7 Judaism. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00984280 650 7 Righteous Gentiles in the Holocaust. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01097945 610 27 Jesuits |xHistory |y20th century. |2nli 610 27 Jesuits |xHistory |y21st century. |2nli 650 7 Holocaust (Christian theology) |2nli 650 7 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |2nli 610 27 Catholic Church |xRelations |xJudaism. |2nli 650 7 Judaism |xRelations |xCatholic Church. |2nli 611 27 Vatican Council |n(2nd : |d1962-1965 : |cBasilica di San Pietro in Vaticano). |tDeclaratio de ecclesiae habitudine ad religiones non-Christianas. |2nli 650 7 Righteous Gentiles in the Holocaust. |2nli 647 7 Jewish Holocaust |d(1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958866 648 7 1900-2099 |2fast 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iOnline version:Bernauer, James William |tJesuit Kaddish |dNotre Dame, Indiana : University of Notre Dame Press, 2019 |z9780268107048 |w(DLC) 2019054899 852 0 |bstacks |hBX3706.3 |i.B47 2020
