Patrick Gallagher argues that under certain circumstances, a postwar form of national mythology develops, derived from POW/MIA activism and the belief that substantial numbers of MIAs continue to survive in secret captivity after war's end. He refers to this phenomenon as the "secret camp myth," after the covert facilities in which these missing men supposedly survive. Gallagher demonstrates that these two parallel cases of national trauma over prisoners and the missing demonstrate how wars can breed mythologies that, if not satisfied, can take on lives of their own and come to dominate national conversations on the history of warfare, aftermath, and defeat."--Provided by publisher. 650 0 Prisoners of war |zGermany |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Loss (Psychology) |xPolitical aspects |vCase studies. 650 0 War |xPsychological aspects |vCase studies. 650 0 Conspiracy theories |vCase studies. 650 0 Collective memory |vCase studies. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xMissing in action |zGermany. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xPrisoners and prisons, Russian. 650 0 Prisoners of war |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Vietnam War, 1961-1975 |xPrisoners and prisons, North Vietnamese. 650 0 Vietnam War, 1961-1975 |xMissing in action |zUnited States. 650 7 HISTORY / Military / General. |2bisacsh 650 7 Collective memory. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01739814 650 7 Conspiracy theories. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01748943 650 7 Missing in action. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01023694 650 7 Prisoners of war. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01077227 650 7 War |xPsychological aspects. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01170363 651 7 Germany. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01210272 651 7 United States. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204155 647 7 World War |d(1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01180924 647 7 Vietnam War |d(1961-1975) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01431664 648 7 1900-1999 |2fast 655 7 Case studies. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423765 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Case studies. |2lcgft 852 0 |bscstacks |hD805.G3 |iG319 2018
