He provides first-hand descriptions about the beginning of what has come to be known as the genocidal Great Famine of 1932-33 in Soviet Ukraine (the Holodomor), widespread discontent and despair, death by starvation, extensive poverty, peasant insurrections and their repression by the regime, the silence of Western journalists in Moscow about the true conditions in the USSR, repeatedly recounting how he was told the food situation was going to get even worse. While sympathetic to the alleged ideals of the Soviet Union, Osherowitch returned disenchanted by what he had witnessed, having understood the human costs of the Soviet experiment."-- |cProvided by publisher. 504 Includes bibliographical references and index. 550 Co-published by Chair of Ukrainian Studies, The University of Toronto. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 600 10 Osherowitch, Mendl, |d1889-1965 |xTravel |zUkraine. 651 0 Ukraine |xHistory |yFamine, 1932-1933. 651 0 Ukraine |xDescription and travel. 651 0 Soviet Union |xDescription and travel. 600 16 Osherowitch, Mendl, |d1889-1965 |xVoyages |zUkraine. 651 6 Ukraine |xHistoire |y1932-1933 (Famine) |0(CaQQLa)201-0396403 651 6 Ukraine |xDescriptions et voyages. |0(CaQQLa)201-0169162 651 6 URSS |xDescriptions et voyages. |0(CaQQLa)201-0099990 600 17 Osherowitch, Mendl, |d1889-1965. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01954717 650 7 Travel. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01155558 651 7 Soviet Union. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01210281 651 7 Ukraine. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01211738 647 7 Famine in Ukraine |c(Ukraine : |d1932-1933) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01353093 648 7 1932-1933 |2fast 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 Power, Sharon, |d1980- |etranslator. 700 1 Luciuk, Lubomyr Y., |eeditor. 852 0 |bscstacks |hDK267 |i.O713 2020
