The plan was to evade the British naval blockade and bring Holocaust survivor refugees to Palestine. Henry Mandel volunteered aboard the Ben Hecht, a converted yacht that challenged the British blockade of Jewish immigrants to pre-state Israel. Captured and detained in Acre Prison, Mandel aided the efforts of prisoners planning an escape. After release, Mandel helped set up a secret bazooka shell plant in New York, which he helped to reassemble in Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Mandel was an Orthodox Jew whose reminiscences provide a uniquely illuminating perspective on the creation of the Jewish state. Mandel's story is explicated in a running commentary that includes the personal narratives of other members of the Ben Hecht crew as well as historical background"-- |cProvided by publisher. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 600 10 Mandel, Henry, |d1920-2015 |vInterviews. 610 20 Ben Hecht (Yacht) |xHistory. 610 20 Bergson Group. 650 0 Jewish refugees |zPalestine |xHistory |y20th century. 651 0 Palestine |xEmigration and immigration |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Zionists |zNew York (State) |zNew York |vBiography. 650 0 Merchant mariners |zUnited States |vBiography. 650 6 Réfugiés juifs |0(CaQQLa)201-0013935 |zPalestine |0(CaQQLa)201-0421814 |xHistoire |y20e siècle. |0(CaQQLa)201-0378892 650 6 Marins (Marine marchande) |zÉtats-Unis |0(CaQQLa)000268596 |vBiographies. |0(CaQQLa)201-0378258 650 7 Emigration and immigration. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00908690 650 7 Jewish refugees. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01730523 650 7 Merchant mariners. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01017001 650 7 Zionists. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01184502 651 7 Middle East |zPalestine. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01207534 651 7 New York (State) |zNew York. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204333 651 7 United States. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204155 600 17 Mandel, Henry, |d1920-2015 |vInterviews. |2nli 610 27 Ben Hecht (Yacht) |xHistory. |2nli 610 27 Bergson Group. |2nli 650 7 Jewish refugees |zEretz Israel |xHistory |y20th century. |2nli 650 7 Zionists |zNew York (State) |zNew York |vBiography. |2nli 650 7 Merchant mariners |zUnited States |vBiography. |2nli 651 7 Eretz Israel |xEmigration and immigration |xHistory |y20th century. |2nli 651 7 Israel |xHistory |yWar of Independence, 1948-1949. |2nli 651 7 Israel |xHistory |yWar of Independence, 1948-1949 |vPersonal narratives, American. |2nli 648 7 1900-1999 |2fast 655 7 Biographies. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01919896 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Interviews. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423832 655 7 Biographies. |2lcgft 655 7 Personal narratives. |2lcgft 655 7 Interviews. |2lcgft 700 1 Flaks, Samuel, |d1984- |eeditor. 776 08 |iOnline version: |tWithout permission |dBoston : Academic Studies Press, 2021 |z9781644695951 |w(DLC) 2021041028 852 0 |bscstacks |hDS151.M3162 |iW58 2021
