Through analysis of provocative designs, the book engages with issues of empathy, secondary witnessing, and depictions of concentration camp iconography. It explores the relationship between empathy and cultural memory when representations of suffering are notably absent. The book submits that one design represents the idea of an uncanny memorial, and also pays attention to viewer co-authorship in counter-monuments. Analysis of counter-monuments also include their creative engagement with German history and their determination to defy fascist aesthetics. As the winning design for The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is abstract with an information centre, there is an exploration of the memorial museum. Callaghan asks whether this configuration is intended to compensate for the abstract memorials ambiguity or to complement the designs visceral potential. Other debates explored concern political memory, national memory, and the controversy of dedicating the memorial exclusively to murdered Jews."--Back cover. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 Holocaust memorials |zGermany |zBerlin |vCase studies. 650 0 Holocaust memorials |zGermany |zBerlin |xPlanning. 650 0 Holocaust memorials |xSocial aspects. 650 0 Collective memory. 650 0 Empathy. 650 0 Social psychology. 650 2 Empathy. |0(DNLM)D004645 650 2 Psychology, Social. |0(DNLM)D011593 650 6 Monuments de l'Holocauste |0(CaQQLa)201-0251881 |zAllemagne |zBerlin |0(CaQQLa)201-0390041 |vÉtudes de cas. |0(CaQQLa)201-0376950 650 6 Monuments de l'Holocauste |0(CaQQLa)201-0251881 |zAllemagne |zBerlin |0(CaQQLa)201-0390041 |xPlanification. |0(CaQQLa)201-0379726 650 6 Monuments de l'Holocauste |0(CaQQLa)201-0251881 |xAspect social. |0(CaQQLa)201-0374080 650 6 Mémoire collective. |0(CaQQLa)201-0157120 650 6 Empathie. |0(CaQQLa)201-0021465 650 6 Psychologie sociale. |0(CaQQLa)201-0000281 650 7 Empathy. |2aat |0(CMalG-V)300055156 650 7 Social psychology. |2aat |0(CMalG-V)300054452 650 7 Holocaust memorials |zGermany |zBerlin. |2nli 650 7 Holocaust memorials |xSocial aspects |zGermany |zBerlin. |2nli 650 7 Collective memory |zGermany. |2nli 650 7 Empathy. |2nli 650 7 Social psychology. |2nli 655 7 Informational works. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01919930 655 7 Case studies. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423765 655 7 Case studies. |2lcgft 655 7 Informational works. |2lcgft 655 7 Études de cas. |2rvmgf |0(CaQQLa)RVMGF-000001726 655 7 Documents d'information. |2rvmgf |0(CaQQLa)RVMGF-000001043 758 |ihas work:Empathetic memorials (Text) |1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGWDXJMYRDVTV7jTrrxQRq |4https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork 776 08 |iEbook version : |z9783030509323 830 0 Palgrave Macmillan memory studies. 852 0 |bscstacks |hD804.175.B47 |iC35 2020
