The world's first ghetto and the origin of the English word, the term simultaneously works to mark specific places and their histories, and as a global symbol that evokes themes of identity, exile, marginalization, and segregation. To capture these multiple meanings, the editors of this volume conceptualize the ghetto as a "memory space that travels" through both time and space. This interdisciplinary collection engages with questions about the history, conditions, and lived experience of the Venice Ghetto, including its legacy as a compulsory, segregated, and enclosed space. Contributors also consider the ghetto's influence on the figure of the Renaissance moneylender, the material culture of the ghetto archive, the urban form of North Africa's mellah and hara, and the ghetto's impact on the writings of Primo Levi and Marjorie Agosín. In addition to the volume editors, The Venice Ghetto features a foreword from James E. Young and contributions from Shaul Bassi, Murray Baumgarten, Margaux Fitoussi, Dario Miccoli, Andrea Yaakov Lattes, Federica Ruspio, Michael Shapiro, Clive Sinclair, and Emanuela Trevisan Semi"-- |cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on January 28, 2022). 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 Jewish ghettos |zItaly |zVenice |xHistory. 650 0 Jews |xSegregation |zItaly |zVenice |xHistory. 650 0 Collective memory |zItaly |zVenice. 651 0 Venice (Italy) |xHistory. 651 0 Venice (Italy) |xIn literature. 650 6 Ghettos |0(CaQQLa)201-0219713 |zItalie |zVenise |0(CaQQLa)201-0485248 |xHistoire. |0(CaQQLa)201-0378888 650 6 Juifs |xSégrégation |0(CaQQLa)201-0060837 |zItalie |zVenise |0(CaQQLa)201-0485248 |xHistoire. |0(CaQQLa)201-0378888 650 6 Mémoire collective |0(CaQQLa)201-0157120 |zItalie |zVenise. |0(CaQQLa)201-0485248 651 6 Venise (Italie) |xHistoire. |0(CaQQLa)201-0018833 650 7 HISTORY / General. |2bisacsh 650 7 Collective memory. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01739814 650 7 Jewish ghettos. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00982786 650 7 Jews |xSegregation. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00983354 651 7 Italy |zVenice. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204473 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 Camarda, Chiara, |eeditor. 700 1 Sharick, Amanda K., |eeditor. 700 1 Trostel, Katharine G., |eeditor. 710 2 Venice Ghetto Collaboration. 776 08 |iPrint version: |tVenice Ghetto |dAmherst : University of Massachusetts Press, [2022] |z9781625346148 |w(DLC) 2021016893 856 40 |3Electronic version(s) available |uhttps://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/ushmm/detail.action?docID=6865550 |zHosted by ProQuest 852 |bebook
