Permission for this new edition was granted by Vallentine Mitchell and Ed Klajman."--Title page verso. 504 Includes bibliographical references and index. 520 "The holes in the walls erected around the Warsaw ghetto in 1940 are only large enough for small children to squeeze through, so it's up to the bravest young inhabitants to smuggle food back to their starving loved ones. Nazi guards patrol the ghetto walls, and the punishment for being caught is death. Jankiel (Jack) Klajman is only nine years old but knows what he needs to do to give his family a chance to survive. It is only through luck that Jack manages to hide from successive waves of deportations to the Treblinka death camp. When the Jews in the ghetto decide to rise up against the Nazis in spring of 1943, Jack turns his smuggling efforts to the aid of the resistance and narrowly escapes the ghetto during the terrible fighting. He later finds refuge in German-occupied Warsaw, witnessing the city's uprising against their invaders just as the glimmer of peace shines on the horizon. Along with other Jewish boys passing as gentile, Jack makes a living selling cigarettes in the heart of the city to the Nazi soldiers. This boy becomes the Smallest Hope of a once-great Jewish community. Although he suffers great losses during the war, when Jack leaves behind the fire-scarred ruins of Warsaw he finds a way to flourish, making his way to Canada and building a life full of music, family and hope for a better future."-- |cProvided by publisher. 530 Issued also in electronic format. 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 600 10 Klajman, Jack, |d1931-2019. 650 0 Jews |zPoland |zWarsaw |vBiography. 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) |zPoland |zWarsaw |vPersonal narratives. 650 0 Jewish children in the Holocaust |zPoland |zWarsaw |vBiography. 651 0 Warsaw (Poland) |xHistory |yWarsaw Ghetto Uprising, 1943. 651 0 Warsaw (Poland) |vBiography. 600 16 Klajman, Jack, |d1931-2019. 650 6 Juifs |zPologne |zVarsovie |0(CaQQLa)201-0493635 |vBiographies. |0(CaQQLa)201-0380815 650 6 Holocauste, 1939-1945 |zPologne |zVarsovie |0(CaQQLa)201-0493635 |vRécits personnels. |0(CaQQLa)201-0128307 650 6 Enfants juifs pendant l'Holocauste |0(CaQQLa)201-0285882 |zPologne |zVarsovie |0(CaQQLa)201-0493635 |vBiographies. |0(CaQQLa)201-0378258 651 6 Varsovie (Pologne) |xHistoire |y1943 (Insurrection du ghetto) |0(CaQQLa)201-0091416 651 6 Varsovie (Pologne) |vBiographies. 650 7 Jewish children in the Holocaust. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00982706 650 7 Jews. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00983135 651 7 Poland |zWarsaw. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204515 647 7 Jewish Holocaust |d(1939-1945) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958866 647 7 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising |c(Warsaw, Poland : |d1943) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01355315 648 7 1939-1945 |2fast 655 7 Biographies. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01919896 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Personal narratives. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423843 655 7 Autobiographies. |2lcgft 655 7 Personal narratives. |2lcgft 710 2 Azrieli Foundation, |epublisher. 776 08 |iOnline version:Klajman, Jack, 1931-2019 |tSmallest hope. |bFirst edition. |dToronto : The Azrieli Foundation, 2023 |z1998880079 |z9781998880072 |w(OCoLC)1374843835 830 0 Azrieli series of Holocaust survivor memoirs. 852 0 |bscstacks |hDS134.72.K53 |iA3 2023
