- Summary
- "Working in the wake of postwar trauma and traversing European and American avant-gardes, the prolific Polish-born painter Maryan (né Pinkas Bursztyn, 1927-1977) forged an iconoclastic type of figurative painting. Spanning four decades of his practice, across painting, drawing, sculpture, and film, this publication documents Maryan's unique approach to art-making through the lens of struggle. My Name is Maryan explores the totality of Maryan's career: how his work was impacted by his firsthand experiences of the Holocaust; his early training in Jerusalem and dialogue with the newly emergent state of Israel; his interactions with peers on both sides of the Atlantic, from CoBrA artists such as Asger Jorn and Pierre Alechinsky to his American circle of artist friends, particularly Leon Golub, June Leaf, and H. C. Westermann; his black-and-white works of the 1950s; and a recreation of his studio at the Chelsea Hotel, where he made his groundbreaking film Ecce Homo (1975) and his late works."-- Back cover.
