"Total genocide" is a state policy to exterminate most or all of a collective group, and destroy its cultural identity. Scholars have tended to focus on ideological explanations to explain the extreme violence of genocide. This study suggests, however, that economic incentives are a motive for total genocide and play a more significant role. A comparative analysis of three cases reveals hardening ethnic and economic minority identities-particularly perceptions of "unjust" wealth and disproportionate representation in lucrative occupations-generates antagonism between minority and majority groups. During periods of crisis, the state enriches itself and supporters by systematically manipulating these identities to justify the minority's extermination and the expropriation of their wealth. 530 Electronic version(s) |bavailable internally at USHMM. 533 Photocopy. |bAnn Arbor, Mich. : |cUMI Dissertation Services, |d2001. |e23 cm. 590 Dissertations and Theses 591 Record updated by Marcive processing 21 June 2024 650 0 Genocide |xEconomic aspects. 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) 650 0 Armenian Genocide, 1915-1923. 651 0 Rwanda |xHistory |yCivil War, 1994 |xAtrocities. 856 41 |uhttp://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?did=732172431&sid=14&Fmt=6&clientId=54617&RQT=309&VName=PQD |zElectronic version from ProQuest 956 41 |uhttp://dc.ushmm.org/library/bib65455/1399452.pdf |zHosted by USHMM. 994 E0 |bLHM 852 0 |bstacks |hHV6322.7 |i.L38 2000 852 |bwww 852 0 |bebook
