He relates his father's service in World War I; a brief family history; attendance at gymnasium in Berlin; work for an international dental supply firm; his father's feeling of safety during Hitler's rise to power because he was a World War I veteran; his sister's emigration to Palestine in 1934; his attempts to emigrate to the United States; and being able to hide during Kristallnacht because he was forewarned.
