He recounts Hungarian occupation; going to work at age thirteen after his father was taken to a forced labor battalion; his father's return; a four-week incarceration with his family in a brick factory; deportation to Auschwitz; separation from his mother and sisters (he never saw them again); his father giving him his bread; separation from his father (he never saw him again); transfer to Mauthausen, then Melk, with his friend Sam; slave labor digging tunnels; assistance from Sam, who had a privileged job; transfer to Ebensee; liberation by United States troops; returning to Velikiye Luchki; attending school in Prague; reunion with his brother in Mukacheve; living in an UNRRA displaced persons camp for a year; and emigration to the United States.
