She describes a happy childhood; her father's death in 1938; Kristallnacht; soldiers looting her home; her family’s attempt to emigrate to Cuba on the St. Louis; being sent to France and living in Loudun and Paris; German invasion; crossing into unoccupied France; living in poverty in Limoges; receiving support from Das Komitee; observing Marshal Phillippe Petain at a parade; and the family receiving visas to take a ship to Lisbon. She recalls staying two weeks before taking a ship to the United States; landing in New York City; living with family on the Lower East Side, then Brooklyn; learning of the deaths of most of her family; and collecting stories of other surviving passengers on the St. Louis for a book. Ms. R discusses how her experiences made her feel uncomfortable around other people as a child; and struggling to comprehend her mother's grief until she started collecting the stories of other St. Louis passengers. 524 Liane R.
