He recounts his family moving to Slobodka when he was two; visiting relatives in Merkinė; antisemitic harassment in the streets; Soviet occupation; German invasion; fleeing briefly; ghettoization; having a private tutor; his bar mitzvah; two sisters' marriages; deportation of his mother and one sister (they did not survive); hiding in bunkers during round-ups; another sister being killed while hiding in a bunker; deportation to Stutthof; transfer with his father to Landsberg; separation when he was sent to Dachau in a children's group; transfer a week later to Auschwitz/Birkenau; Ze'ev G. leading the children; slave labor; frequent selections; a death march and train transfer to Buchenwald; clearing rubble from Allied bombings; visiting a local medical clinic; receiving Red Cross packages; liberation by United States troops; traveling to Dresden, Łódź, Warsaw, and Białystok seeking family; returning to Łódź; joining a Hashomer Hatzair kibbutz in Kraków; being smuggled to Prague, Karlovy Vary, and Munich; reunion with his father in Feldafing displaced persons camp; attending technical school there; his father joining two daughters in Kovno; living with another sister and her husband in Föhrenwald displaced persons camp; living on a Betar kibbutz; collecting weapons for the Irgun to smuggle to Israel; emigration to Israel via Marseille on the Altalena; clashes with the Israeli military; serving in the Arab-Israel war; marriage; and the births of two children.
