    [MUSIC PLAYING]
    This chilly battle is nearing its end.
    On the 13th day after the outbreak of hostilities,
    an iron ring closes ranks remnants
    of the Polish central army.
    Its divisions held together while persistent German attacks
    vainly tried to break through the ring.
    However fierce their charges and however unexpected
    their point of attack.
    The German divisions having admirably
    proved their efficiency in the attack
    as they now proved themselves master of defense.
    They hold fast, and the result of this battle
    is a complete violation of Polish Vistula army.
    The German high command reports from the 10th
    to the 21st of 1939, 170,000 prisoners, 320 guns, and 40
    tanks captured.
    The Polish army is no more.
    On the 18th day of the campaign, German troops
    are establishing contact with Russian formations
    which have entered Polish territory in the meantime.
    After brief negotiations, a demarcation line
    is being drawn up, establishing the two spheres of interest
    between Russia and Germany.
    Later vice foreign minister von Ribbentrop
    continues negotiations in Moscow on the matter,
    and the question is definitely settled.
    In the meantime, the ring around the Polish capital closes.
    On his way to the Warsaw plant, the Fuhrer
    reviews his bodyguard, which has taken part
    in all the hard fights of the campaign.
    With a view of sparing the population of Warsaw the misery
    and hardships of a siege, the German high command
    sends in the demand to the commander
    of the city by radio and handbills
    to capitulate within 12 hours.
    The demands having been left unanswered
    is followed by another suggestion
    to at least secure the free retreat
    of the civilian population.
    This offer, too, remained unanswered.
    Only 870 members of the diplomatic corps and 1,200
    foreigners could lead Warsaw on road specially earmarked
    by the German military authorities.
    They are received and guided on by German officers.
    Since all attempts at saving the civilian population of Warsaw
    have failed, the guns must now have their say.
    After a bombardment lasting several days,
    the city of Warsaw finally surrenders
    on September 27, 1939.
    General Blaskowitz receives the Polish officer authorized
    to negotiate the truce.
