- Description
- A Crown Film Unit Production. Short film documenting the aftermath of the war, including the movement of refugees, Displaced Persons camps, rehabilitation, and going home.
Young men crossing bridge. Women and men moving bushels of hay, guarded by a soldier. Labor in fields, railroads, factories. Liberation scenes: tanks moving through villages, people shaking hands, celebrating; men emerging from forests; crowds leaning out windows, cheering; beating a Nazi?; destroying buildings. Refugees moving on foot and truck with belongings/luggage. Destroyed bridge. More refugees, smiles beaming (staged?), crossing river.
Allied officers establish DP camps. Survivors register at tables. A female survivor slaps another woman (presumably a Nazi or collaborator). Survivors being disinfected with DDT to prevent the spread of typhus, then being examined by medical personnel. VAR shots of many sick, wounded, emaciated survivors. Scenes in a hospital with patient, doctor, and nurse. More shots of survivors. Rehabilitation workers preparing bread, rations, clothing for distribution. Survivor trying on clothing provided by workers. Flags. VAR views of life at the camp: INT, officers at desks; CU, nurse and baby; soldiers with baby; children in a classroom; crowd listening to speech delivered outdoors; crowd listening to radio broadcast; band performing; men and women dancing, drinking, socializing; woman in peasant attire performing traditional dance. Large groups of survivors exiting camp on truck, waving, at airfield and train station. Getting off trains, looking for family members in waiting crowd. Some embrace, kiss, cry. CUs, MCUs faces as they meet. More shots of EXT and INT of DP camp. CU, peasant women with scarf wrapped around her head. Classrooms. Crowds milling about camp, sitting with belongings/luggage.
