- Biography

Bernard John Sobczak, Irene Sobczak's late husband, was born in Chicago, IL. His parents returned to their native Poland in 1927 and settled in Bydgoszcz. In 1943 Bernard was taken to a forced labor camp in Lohfelden near Kassel, where he worked in a military airplane factory. After the liberation, Bernard returned to Poland and on November 27, 1946 he sailed on board "Ernie Pyle" to New York, arriving on December 13, 1946.
