    Brief Narrative
    50 cents bank note issued in the Straits Settlements and Malay States in 1941. These settlements were colonies of Great Britain from 1867-1946. Beginning in 1939, the Malay dollar was recognized as leqal tender.

    Rectangular offwhite paper currency. Face has a graphic design in burgundy ink with a scroll and geometric border. A medallion in the lower left corner has Malaysian script; the medallions in the other 3 corners have the numeric denomination, 50. There is an oval portrait of King George VI on the left and a palm tree on the right. An orange and blue geometric medallion is in the center with the numeric denomination in orange. There is text in English and Malaysian over the center of the note. The back has a scroll and geometric border in burgundy ink. Across the top are 7 crests in a rectangular section, with the Straits Settlements at the center. In the center at the bottom are 4 crests in a larger medallion. At the bottom left and right corners is the denomination in medallions.
