Porter in the United States Army in Germany during World War II and after the war as a guard during the International Military Tribunal proceedings held in Nuremberg, Germany.

- The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2011 by Ethel P. Kemmerer, the sister of David C. Porter and the executor of his Estate.
