- The papers include s testimony, 9 pages, by Benjamin Zachariah Steiner (born Vilmos Schneider, now also known as William Schneider), originally of Budapest, Hungary. In his testimony, he describes his family history, being sent to a Catholic boarding school in 1943 as a failed attempt to avoid deportation, his deportation to Auschwitz at age 8 1/2, and memories of being experimented upon. After the war, he reunited with his father and mother, who had survived in a forced labor battalion and as a medical doctor on the eastern front, respectively. Mr. Steiner escaped Hungary after the Hungarian uprising in 1956 and immigrated to New Zealand. Also included is a family tree, a photograph, and a letter testifying that Mr. Steiner remembers SS-Obersturmfuhrer Karl Hoecker on the ramp at Auschwitz.
