Mariya Vaganova, born in 1918 in Novopokrovska in the former Soviet Union, describes the persecution of Jews following the invasion of German forces; witnessing the arrival of a transport to a nearby ditch; hiding among the crops and hearing gunfire; watching after the departure of the truck as three elderly Russian men covered the ditch; the absence of clothing or other personal items near the ditch; and her realization that the shooting involved the murder of children from the Jewish school.
